Long-term cultivation experience

Cultivation

Cultivation notes based on many years of practical experience, focusing on free-draining substrates, temperature management, rooting, grafting, pollination and propagation.

Substrates & water

For the succulent asclepiads covered here, loose, well-drained and predominantly mineral substrates are central. Standing moisture should be avoided, especially at low temperatures.

Temperature & light

Many species are sensitive to the combination of high temperatures, full sun and poor air movement. Habitat- and species-specific shading is therefore more useful than a uniform light regime.

Rooting & grafting

Re-rooting requires airy conditions and considerable patience. For difficult species, grafting – including onto Ceropegia woodii – can be a reliable cultivation method.

Pollination & propagation

The complex floral morphology of Asclepiadoideae makes hand pollination demanding but reproducible. Our own trials are documented in detail.
